Amongst the excitement and nerves that surround a pregnancy, there is also the desperate longing to see what the unborn child looks like. Since the 70's, women have depended on antenatal screenings that weren't always clear to catch a glimpse of their child. However, in recent years a new technology has emerged in the medical world, 4D scanning. A 4D scan is a recording of an ultrasound allowing parents to clearly see everything their child does in the womb.
4D baby scans are not invasive, they are a lot like the 12 and 20 week scans in the pregnancy calender. Though, the probe is different, it sends out more sound waves at a lesser rate a minute than an average ultrasound meaning the baby and mother are at absolutely no risk. It basically maps the face and reconstructs a 3D image, it's called '4D' because it is in real time and you are watching every movement as it happens. A 4D scan is offered after the 2D scan and only if and once the baby is in a very visible position.
Despite how daunting the experience and price may be (prices vary from £100-£300), it is an experience that will never be forgotten and one that can be repeated again and again thanks to the optional DVD copy of the scan. It is an opportunity for excited, impatient and curious parents to see their child before it is born. Consider the first milestones with a child. The first laugh, the first crawl, the first tooth. Imagine a new milestone being added, before the child was born. Imagine seeing a baby in the womb. Not feeling a kick or a slight movement but actually seeing a baby, complete with features while it was still inside its mother.
Though 4D scans are generally for aesthetic use, they may also provide an early insight into possible abnormalities and health issues which could be brought to a halt or at least seen to before they worsen. Yet another comforting side effect of this scan.

I'd reccomend a 4d scan to anyone, it really was a special experience.
